The ability to detect a target remotely is one of the most fundamental modern defensive capabilities.  Lasers are an ideal source for both ranging and targeting objects at a distance because of their ability to maintain a collimated beam over vast distances pinpointing a particular target of interest.  For both range finding and laser designation applications, high energy pulsed lasers are used, but for a very different reason.  In laser range finders, the distance resolution is determined by the pulse width since the round-trip time of flight is used to determine the distance.  Therefore, the shorter the pulse width of the laser, the lower the ambiguity and the better the range finder’s system resolution.  In laser designation, on the other hand, the laser is actively pulsed with a pedimented code which can then be detected and locked onto by the weapon’s targeting system.  Here at RPMC lasers, we offer a wide range of diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers, microchip lasers, and flashlamp pumped lasers which are ideally suited for standoff detection.
